Kowhai Consulting are a team of seven full time employees
and also have 2 associated personnel who work alongside the
Kowhai team on a full-time basis. Kowhai have an office at
Waitomo Caves, an office in the Hamilton Central Business District
and a Consultant based in Auckland.

Tania
Simpson
(Ngāti
Manu, Ngāti Maniapoto) (Master Matauranga Maori, Te
Wananga o Raukawa)
Tania Simpson is the founding
director of Kōwhai Consulting and has won a range of
business awards. Tania is a trained negotiator and practiced
facilitator and has over 18 years experience in Māori
development including business, education, land development,
environment and Treaty issues. She is a current board member
of Mighty River Power, a Board Member of the Ruapehu, Whanganui,
Rangitikei Tourism Major Regional Initiative and a member
of the Institute of Directors. In September 2005 “Her
Business” magazine profiled Kowhai’s Executive
Director, Tania Simpson as one of seven successful Māori
women in business.

Shane Te Ruki
(Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Porou)
Shane Te Ruki is an artist and specialist in Tikanga Māori. He is one of only 38 artists nationwide to be awarded the Toi Iho Māori Made Mark, a trademark of authenticity for Māori artworks. Shane works as a cultural advisor to Kowhai Consulting Ltd. Shane is a Trustee of Tui Trust and is a staunch supporter of enhancing Ngāti Maniapoto. Shane has produced three publications that outline the uniqueness of the Maniapoto region and its people.

Marama Henare-Waho
(Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Porou) (Bachelor of Law – University of Auckland, Barrister & Solicitor to the High Court of NZ)
Marama is a qualified lawyer and has a broad range of experience in Māori development. Marama has worked as a Legal Researcher and Office Solicitor for the Waitangi Tribunal, Operations Team Member and Business Analyst for the Māori Land Court. She is also an experienced facilitator, tutor and lecturer having lectured at Waikato Law School and taught courses in Legal Systems, Legal Method, Treaty of Waitangi and Māori Claims Processes. Marama is a Te Reo Māori speaker and has sat on various Māori land trusts and incorporations and is presently involved in rebuilding her whānau papakainga at Mokau.

Sheena Tepania
(Ngāti Kahu ki Whangaroa, Te Aupouri) (LLB, Auckland)
Sheena’s strength is legal interpretation and advice. Having completed her LLB in 1998, Sheena has worked as a lawyer in Auckland and undertaken a large amount of work for Waitangi Tribunal claimants and also in the Environment Court. Sheena works closely with Maori and regional authorities to provide assistance in helping them realise their long term goals.

Melita
Whaiapu

Raukawa)
Melita’s expertise is in business administration
and advisory services. Melita also specialises in community
development in rural areas. Melita’s experience covers
20 years working in business and legal settings and in recent
time she has been assisting rural Maori organisations to develop.
Melita was instrumental in facilitating a rongoā Maori
wānanga for the Taharoa community and also in organising
training for community members to undertake and extensive pre-hospital
emergency training course.

Piki Knap
(Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāi Te Rangi) (Bachelor of Management Studies, Waikato)
Piki has a long history in the field of tourism. She is the manager of the Tui Trust, a non-profit organisation that provides assistance to children and also supports environmental, cultural and educational initiatives. Piki’s background is also in marketing and administration.

Susan
Willison
(Ngāti Raukawa)
Susan is an accomplished administrator with many years experience in this
field. She has knowledge of the insurance and education sectors having
spent many years working in these areas. Susan also assists small organisations
with their planning and financial management. Susan also ran her own administrative
business and was contracted by the Central North Island Kindergarten Association
to organise, arrange and facilitate their annual conference in 2002. She
also takes an active role in her local community, having been the secretary/treasurer
for the local rugby club for ten years.

Conny Huaki
(Ngāti Mahuta) (NZIM Diploma in Management, Open Polytechnic of NZ, Certificate in Te Ara Māori (Year One), NZIM Certificate in Management, Tourism, Professional Cookery and General Cookery)
Conny has a commitment to utilising and sharing her skills and experiences to contribute toward building better communities. Conny has 13 years combined experience in office management, administration, secretarial and customer services roles. She also has experience in conference and event management and accounting. Conny has excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively across cultures and disciplines at all levels.
